Residential Carpet Cleaning

Introduction:

We will limit our training of residential carpet cleaning to the most common types of carpet found in homes. The most common types of carpet are synthetics or man-made fibers in a cut pile formation. By far the most common fiber is nylon, but polyester and olefin are making some headway in the market. We will confine this discussion to carpet made of nylon or polyester.

Procedure:

  1. Vaccum the carpet
  2. Pre-spray carpet with cleaner and citrus boost
  3. Extract using hot water, or clean with bonnet system (which ever you are using)
  4. Apply Carpet Protector
  5. Brush Carpet and dry

Virtually every residential nylon carpet that you see will be protected with stain resist technology. This keeps the carpet from being soiled and stained easily, but no carpet is completely stain proof. In order to maintain the effectiveness of the stain and soil resistance you should follow certain guidelines. Going outside these guidelines can cause damage to the protective coating and even result in warranties being voided. The recommendations that follow will keep you within these parameters and produce excellent results.

  Step 1: Dry Soil Removal
Begin by vacuuming the carpet to remove dry soil. It is easier to remove many soils before they are mixed with cleaning solutions. Make sure that your vacuum has a new back or has been recently cleaned out. This will provide maximum suction in the vacuum and therefore remove the most amount of dry soil.

Step 2: Pre-spray
Pre-spraying a carpet is hands down the most effective way to get the best results when cleaning a carpet. It allows sufficient time for the cleaner to emulsify and dissolve the soil and stains in the carpet. Mix one scoop of Protects Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner with one gallon of hot water, and apply to carpet in a ratio of approximately 1 gallon of cleaner to 200 sq/ft of carpet. This will soften and loosen the soil for quicker more thorough cleaning. Although optional, it is a good idea to agitate the solution into the carpet with a carpet brush or rake. This will work the solution into the carpet and the physical agitation will loosen the soil. For heavily soiled or greasy carpet add Citrus Boost to your pre-spray to enhance the cleaning action.

Step 3: Hot Water Extract or Bonnet Cleaning
This is considered the “rinse cycle” where you wash the dirt away that was loosened in the previous step. Using either hot water (the hotter the water the better results you will get) or a diluted mixture (1 scoop to 5 gallons of water) of Protects Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner, thoroughly extract the carpets using an overlapping pattern to remove the dirt, soil and stains from the carpet. Because Protects exclusive formula contains no soaps or shampoos, and the PH of the cleaner is very close to being neutral, there is no need to use and acid rinse or a neutralizing post cleaning spray.

For Bonnet Cleaning, mix one scoop of Protect Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner to one gallon of water and apply to the carpet using an overlapping spraying pattern for even and thorough coverage (1 gallon of solution to approximately 200 sq/ft of carpet). We recommend you use a pre-conditioning brush to lightly agitate the carpet and then clean as normal. Because of our no soap formula, our cleaner will not foam up or cause cleaning problems due to foam build up. However, if there are soap residues in the carpet from a previous cleaning it may hinder the effectiveness of your bonnets unless you use a good Defoamer to eliminate the foam while you clean.

Step 4: Apply Carpet Protector
By applying a professional strength carpet protect after each cleaning will assure that your carpets maintain their stain resistant qualities. Research has shown that after just one year of normal wear, vacuuming and cleaning, as much as 40% of your carpets original protector/stain resistance can be worn off. Protecting your carpets after cleaning will help to reestablish your carpets protective coating and assure optimum stain and soil resistance.

Step 5: Grooming and Drying
Grooming your carpets with a carpet rake will help to remove wand or bonnet marks. This creates a good visual effect, but more importantly it aids drying by straightening and separating the fibers

Be sure that ventilation is at optimum levels by opening windows, doors, or turning on ceiling fans, etc. If you have a swamp cooler, use the fan only, but do not turn on the water. The added humidity from the swamp cooler will actually slow the drying process down. If you have an air mover or large fan, this will vastly speed up the drying process.

Optional Procedure:
A very common problem that many people face while cleaning their carpets is the presence of soap residue from a previous cleaning. These residues can not only make cleaning more difficult, but are one of the main reasons for rapid re-soiling of carpets or spot reappearing. If you are concerned about or think you have a problem with these residues in your carpet, you should strongly consider using Protects Carpet Protector and Residue remover. This will take the place of the regular protector, while still giving your carpets that added boost of protections it needs. More importantly however, it will help to eliminate and remove the soapy residues in your carpets.

Although Protects Exclusive Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner will remove the majority of spots and spills in your carpet, it is sometimes necessary to use other cleaners to removal all of the stains. If you have stains like grease, tar, make up, rust, or red stains you may want to look at ordering some of our other great cleaning supplies to take out those really tough stains.
