Upholstery Cleaning
for Synthetics
(nylon, polyester, olefin, etc
)
Most synthetic furniture recommends that you use warm
water and the foam from some type of soap or shampoo.
Although, we strongly recommend that you avoid using
any type of soap or shampoo on your upholstery, if your
tags recommend that processes, then the following procedure
will be perfectly fine to use. If your furniture tags
recommend dry cleaning, we recommend that you contact
a professional instead.
Process:
1- Fiber identification.
2- Pre-inspect and pre-test.
3- Pre-spray with Upholstery
Cleaner
4- Extract with Hot water
5- Apply Fine Fabric or Upholstery
Proctor (see Caution at bottom of page)
6- Set the nap with a carding brush.
Always do a cleaning test in an inconspicuous are to
determine the suitability of your procedures and your
cleaning solution.
Cleaning Procedure:
1- Pre-test:
In an inconspicuous spot on the furniture spray with
cleaning mixture to make sure the fabric does not bleed
or fade.
2- Pre-spray:
Pre-spraying your upholstery with a quality Upholstery
Cleaner allows the cleaner to work it's way deeper
into the fabric, thus helping the cleaner to loosen
and dissolve the dirt and soils more effectively. Do
not spray the entire piece of furniture all at once.
It will dry to fast and not work as effectively. One
or two cushions at a time is what we recommend.
3- Conditioning/Brushing:
Using an upholstery brush, horse hair brush, or other
soft pile brush, lightly scrub the piece of upholstery
that has just been pre-sprayed. This will again work
the cleaner deeper into the fibers and loosen dirt and
soil.
4- Extraction:
Using hot to very hot water, extract the piece of upholstery
that has been pre-sprayed and conditioned. Make sure
to overlap each stroke of the wand to prevent streaking.
It is also a good idea to extract the upholstery at
least one more time without water, meaning just use
the suction of the machine and no water. This will help
to remove more of the water and allow the furniture
to dry faster
5- Final Grooming once the fabric is dry, groom
the pile against the nap using a
6- Apply Fine Fabric
Protector to keep the upholstery in the best
condition and help prevent soiling and staining.
